Pennex is proud to have supported Michelin in the specialist packing and international shipment of a remarkable piece of aviation history: the Michelin Trophy, awarded to Wilbur Wright in 1908 for achieving the longest flight of the year.
The historic trophy was collected from Birmingham and transported to Pennex’s facility, where our team developed a bespoke packaging solution to protect this irreplaceable piece of art during its journey to Michelin’s headquarters in France.
Bespoke Packaging for a Priceless Artefact
Given the historical significance and delicate nature of the Michelin Trophy, its protection throughout transit was paramount. Pennex designed a custom packaging solution featuring a foam-lined case, cushioned protection and carefully positioned foam-lined bracing to support the trophy at key points.
This tailored approach ensured the artefact was securely held in place, minimising movement and providing the protection required for safe international transportation.
From collection and receipt at our facility through to export packing and shipment, every stage was carefully managed, ensuring the trophy arrived safely at its destination.
Celebrating a Milestone in Aviation History
The Michelin Trophy commemorates a landmark achievement in aviation. On 31 December 1908, Wilbur Wright flew 124.7 kilometres (77.48 miles) over a triangular course at Camp d’Auvours, near Le Mans, France, completing the flight in 2 hours, 20 minutes and 23 seconds.
This record-breaking achievement earned Wright the first Michelin Trophy and a prize of 20,000 French francs, recognising his contribution to the development of powered flight.
Today, the trophy is proudly exhibited at Michelin’s headquarters in France, where it stands as a lasting reminder of this pioneering moment in aviation.
